STRANGE FACTS:
Did you know?
* Sunderland played at St James' Park before Newcastle United did!
In February 1881, Sunderland were beaten 5-0 by Newcastle Rangers in the Northumberland and Durham Challenge Cup. So they actually played on the ground before NUFC were even formed!

Did you know?
* How Newcastle United became The Magpies
Well, you may easily assume its because we play in black and white, but thats not the case. There are a couple of theories. One is that some Magpies nested in the ground and the players liked them so decided to call themselves that. Another is that a priest in residence at the Blackfriers Monastery who was a avid fan of the club, was often seen with the players dressed in his own black and white habit. This along with the players kit and fans being in those colours led to the name.

Did you know?
* Wear-Tees derby!
In 1903 the Wear-Tees derby has to be played at our ground because Roker Park had been closed. The reason for the closure was because in a previous game the Sunderland fans had "stoned" the Sheff Wed players and thrown oranges at the ref !

Did you know?
* Club had a dog mascot
The club used to own a Great Dane called Rex and it was often seen tied up next to the players tunnel on match days. Naturally the dog was black and white. Sadley, Rex is no longer with us.

Did you know?
* Magpie gift
Some of you lucky enough to have seen a stuffed magpie in one of the display cases at St James' Park. This was given to the club back in 1908 by the journalists of the Northern Mail.

Did you know?
* Derby Trouble
Its not just in the years we can remember. The rivalry has been going on for years, even before football. A typical account of this was back in 1909 when a game at Roker Park between Newcastle and Sunderland was held up due to a pitch invasion. Newcastle won the game 2-0 although local police were offering a £5 reward to find someone with a knife who stabbed a police horse.

Did you know?
* Supporters Club
The first supporters club recorded was formed in 1930.

Did you know?
* Ticket Price Inflation
In the 1936 season, the price of a season ticket was 3 pounds and 12 shillings.

Did you know?
* Sunderland Playing in Black and White
They were against Southampton in the FA Cup in 1950 and were told to change their colours. They ended up borrowing the NUFC strips to play in!

Did you know?
* They Complain About Playing Too Many Games Today!
Back in 1968/1969 season, Newcastle played a total of 62 games. Of these 42 were in the league, 3 were friendly and the rest were cup games including the UEFA (Fairs) cup.

Did You Know?
* What no Scot?
In mid 1982 Newcastle had no Scottish player in the first squad. The first time this had ever been the case.
